The two price bands, and the 15:00 step
Shibuya Sky charges by time of entry, not by ticket type. Anything from opening until 14:59 is the lower band; anything from 15:00 is the higher one. The gap is 700 yen online, which is roughly a 26 per cent increase for walking in a few hours later. The reason is demand: the late slots include sunset and the lit city, which is what most visitors want, so those are the ones that carry the premium and the ones that sell out.
Online is 300 yen cheaper than the counter
Booking online saves 300 yen per adult in either band. Some guides say 200; the official figures are 2,700 against 3,000 before 15:00, and 3,400 against 3,700 after, which is 300 in both cases. The saving is not the main argument for booking online, though. Counter tickets depend on availability on the day, and on a busy evening there may be none, so the online price is also the only one you can count on.
Children, and the rule that catches families out
Children's tickets are sold only at the counter, on the day of admission, and under-5s enter free. This surprises people, because the resale platforms often list a 12-plus minimum and travellers conclude that younger children cannot come at all. They can; their tickets just are not sold in advance online. If you are booking adult tickets in advance for a family, you still need to buy the children's at the counter when you arrive.
What the price does not include
Admission covers SKY GATE, the rooftop SKY STAGE and the indoor SKY GALLERY. It does not cover THE ROOF SHIBUYA SKY, the seated rooftop bar area, which is a separate paid add-on on top of a valid admission ticket. Guided tours sold through booking platforms bundle the admission with a guide and cost several times the ticket price; they are worth it for the guiding and the held slot, not as a way to get in cheaply.
